Cruelty-free products part two.
Last week I wrote about the cruelty-free makeup products I use, you can see that post by following this link. This time around I thought I would talk about the other beauty products I use as a part of my daily and weekly regime.
This time last last year I was huge into packaging-free products, using bar soap, shampoo, conditioner, face wash and moisturisers. I have found over time that I have moved back slowly to using packaged products. If you are looking for an amazing packaging-free face wash and moisturiser I would highly recommend Ethique, a NZ based beauty bar company. I love their In Your Face cleanser and Saving Face serum as beauty bars however they are not currently on the list of products I’m using. Every other product I have struggled to find a high quality product that is packaging free.
While I am still on the hunt for some amazing packaging free products, the products below are what I currently use and love.
Shampoo & Conditioner: I have colour treated hair which means I need a good purple shampoo and conditioner to keep the brassiness out of sight . Until recently I used the Lush Daddy-O purple shampoo but I didn’t feel like this was doing its job as a purple shampoo and my hair was always tangled. After doing some research I decided to splurge on the Kevin Murphy Blonde Angel range and I have not looked back! By far the best purple shampoo I have ever used, I highly recommend. I bought mine from Shampoo ‘n Things.
If you’re looking for a cheaper option I do like and use the Organic Care range that can be found at any supermarket.
Hair Treatments: I use the Keune treatment satin oil on my ends to keep them healthy.
Dry Shampoo: Currently I use the Batiste dry shampoos since (to the best of my knowledge) they do not test on animals. I am hoping to switch to a powder form of dry shampoo in order to get away from using an aerosol can, but for now the original Batiste dry shampoo is my go-to. I buy mine from my local supermarket.
Body wash: This product changes almost every time I get a new one. My favourite brands are Lush bar soaps and the Original Source shower gels that you can buy from any supermarket.
Face wash: I mentioned my favourite Ethique cleanser above but I am currently using The Body Shop Vitamin E Gentle Face wash and enjoying it a lot. Since going vegan I have found that my skin does not need the harsh products it used to in order to keep it clear, so a simple cream cleanser works well for my combination-dry skin.
Moisturisers: To be paired with the face wash, I currently use The Body Shop Vitamin E Moisture Cream for all skin types. I love how this soaks into the skin leaving it feeling smooth and nourished.
Makeup remover: I use the Essano Rosehip Micellar water that you can buy at your local supermarket.
Deodorant: Ah, the most difficult product to find cruelty free in my opinion, especially if you want it to work. I’m not sure if it’s a placebo effect, or an actually side-effect (?!) of being vegan, but I have found that I do not sweat or smell as much since changing my diet. In saying that, I have been using The Guv’ner deodorant powder from Lush for almost a year and it has been great! I place it on the back of my hand and rub it into my armpits after my shower and the Charcol helps to absorb the maybe slightly unpleasant smells that naturally occur. This option may not be for everyone, but I recommend asking for a sample at Lush and seeing how you like it.
Perfume: If I want a little something extra I will use the Black Must fragrance mist from The Body Shop. They have so many delicious scents to choose from.
Toothpaste: I will say that I have converted back to using generic toothpaste from the supermarket. For almost two years I was using the Red Seal brand or Lush toothy tabs and I loved them both. However, although I have not researched extensively, I ultimately decided I wanted a toothpaste that contains fluoride, so switched back to my usual toothpaste.
